Celebrity Access: The Potbelleez

With their phenomenal success reigning over the dance scene of 2008, we at BB HQ were busting to have a chat with the Potbelleez. Sitting down with the group members - Dave Goddie, Jonny Sonic, MC Blue and Ilan Kidron whilst on their national tour - was our celebrity stalker (ooops sorry interviewer!), Miss Kate. She got the lowdown on the group's latest success, excitement, hard work and ideas about their bright futures. Check out Kate's casual and totally hilarious interview with the Potbeleez below!

The last time I saw you guys was on the red carpet at this year's Arias where you were up for three nominations. How was the rest of the night for you?
Dave: I mean it was great to just be there and have three nominations. We never thought, coming from Ireland, that we would be up for anything like this. So it was a bit of a spin out and we did really enjoy it. We got really drunk and partied on a bit. We went to the official after-party, the after-after party and then partied on more at my house and yeah we just partied! Partied, partied, and partied!

Dave, both you and Johnny are Irish and came out to Australia as backpackers, is that right?
Ilan and MC Blue: More like fudge packers.

Fudge packers?
Johnny: Never mind. Basically we didn't come out to Australia with our backpacks. I came out with a suitcase and a box of records. Dave and I just had the same focus and same ideas. We knew of each other from back in Dublin so when we met over here it was like "F" it, let's get together and do something. I think we collaborated and came up with two mixes and were the only Australians at the time that had the same ideas as we did. I mean there were rap groups and DJ's using turntables but nothing quite like us.

So how did the Potbelleez evolve from just being a DJ Duo?
As I said, Dave and I got together, came up with a concept and a name and then badabing badaboom three years later we met Blue and then another year after that Ilan. The group has being going strong for six years now and it has been great.

Let's go back to 2006, where I read that Tim Duggan from Rolling Stone described you guys as the "rising stars of the dance scene". Was that a defining moment for you?
MC Blue: No, that was kind of before the avalanche started down the hill. That was even before our first EP single and way before Don't Hold Back, so that was just really very encouraging. It was the boys (Dave and Johnny) that earned that comment from rocking parties and performing at their own night in a King Cross club, that they built the immediate fan base.

Ilan: And no one could have possibly expected what happened. The avalanche is the right way of putting it - little snow balls started and then bang all of a sudden we are still on the mountain but it is going real fast.

As your first major success and break into the commercial market, was the single Don't Hold Back a statement for you?
Johnny: Well, no not really. The record company heard it and was like; we need to get that out as soon as possible. We had other records that we wanted to put out and loads of other ideas but once they heard the initial chorus tune with the guitar it was a done deal. So we worked with a guy called Sam Moore who directed what we produced and wrote, who is basically an engineering genius who made it sound amazing. We then sent it away to London to get mastered and then asked a few favors from our international friends and basically threw it out there. It was just a hit and run sort of thing.

In terms of song writing, you guys are fairly unique, what is your style?
In terms of developing a song, we kind of started with a basic concept and then threw our own two cents in. Sometimes our music starts as a backing track and I will come in on the guitar or Blue might start with a funky rap and these guys will just build something around it. We basically move forward very quickly and as hard as we can.

The Potbelleez has had some amazing success internationally. You have topped the charts in the UK and played all over the world, do you ever have to stop and pinch yourselves?
Dave: Ireland has been very good to us so there is a few of us pinching ourselves when we go over. We get text messages from people during the night saying "dude I'm listening to your song on the radio", which is crazy. We've had some success in Germany. We played in front of 35,000 people all up…oh and in Sweden too.

Ilan: This is the beginning, really. We are going back over to Europe for a tour because Don't Hold Back was such a great success.
