Teen Life: One Girl At A Time: Behind the Scenes
BB’s documentary, One Girl At A Time, is our way of being actionista. The idea is to give girls a voice on the number one issue affecting them right now – self esteem; or lack of positive self esteem. So many girls share self esteem issues, so why not let girls tell it how it is so that we can get the message out there and make the change….One Girl At A Time. We encourage you to watch the vid and share it with all your friends. We also wanted to share with our boos the behind the scenes of this incredible journey.
How it all started
We found out about a charity event that was being held in LA and were asked to partner with MyBeauty to be part of it. Immediate response - hell yes!
The event was being held in one of the most under-privileged areas of Los Angeles. Oh, and also happened to be the area famous for the LA riots and gang warfare. For BB though it was an incredible opportunity to do something that we are passionate about….helping girls feel good about themselves. The fact that we would have the opportunity to impact on girls who were potentially the most vulnerable made it clear cut that we had to do this!
Star alignment
MyBeauty had the gorgeous Monique Coleman, of High School Musical fame, participating in their workshops and so we asked if she’d like to take part in this event. She graciously accepted. We were so excited about the massive surprise in store for the girls when they met Monique!
The stars were still aligning! During our workshopping the format of the event with our US team, it transpires BB’s director of US Operations, knows a young guy who is studying film production. Enter Kyle Cox, a 19 year old uber talented guy who is passionate about filming and editing. We asked Kyle if he would be keen to come along to film the entire thing and then help us put it together into a mini doco about teen girls and self esteem. His response is a resounding yes. His buddy, Cody Jameson, joins the team. A talented photographer, he’s on hand to help Kyle out and captures the event in photos.
When you see the end result, to say Kyle is amazing is an understatement!!! Consider that he shot hours of footage, with countless interviews, and he was able to put that all together in this vision he had for the doco.
It is confronting and daunting to hear how bad girls can be made to feel about themselves but at the same time uplifting and inspiring to hear that they have some pretty cool stuff to say about what defines real beauty.
As our boos know, we are all about giving young people the opportunity to realise their dreams. Kyle came to us with little experience, understandably given he is only 19, but it’s all about giving someone that window or opening your mind and your heart to their potential. I’m am thrilled we had him and am hoping this can be a launch pad for him and his directing aspirations and career! Pay attention Martin Scorsese!!!
