Beauty 101: Brow Beat

Beauty obsession of the moment ? perfectly shaped brows! There?s something about amazing arches that screams stylish. They frame the face, open up the eyes and make you look amazing with or without makeup. So, in our quest to unearth the secret to perfect brows we tracked down the experts for the low down on brows.

Sharon-Lee Hamilton (aka the Brow Queen) and Napoleon Perdis Senior Core Creative Makeup Artist, Kate Squires, give us their eyebrow essential insights. These girls know their stuff, so listen up!

Kate says: ?The perfect brow starts in line and above the tear duct. It then angles slightly upwards as it continues past the outer edge of the iris, arches at this point, then angles slightly downwards, tapering to a fine point past the outer corner of the eye.?

According to Sharon-Lee, the most common mistake people make when plucking their brows is to tweeze from beneath the brow only when in fact the best line is often made by lowering the brow from above in order to create the perfect arch.

For best results wax first to remove all the ?fluff? to give a cleaner finish. Follow with tweezing, which allows more precision. According to Sharon-Lee, this is imperative when taking the bulk out from within the brow ? not above or underneath but the inside of the brow.

The very best advice when it comes to brows is to see a specialist at least once to get the line right and then you can try maintaining them yourself. For your first eyebrow shape go and see an expert so you don?t risk plucking too much or ruining your natural shape and risk them not growing back.

Sharon-Lee says that when it comes to determining the right shape for someone there are so many factors that should be taken into account: eye shape and colour; taper of the upper lash line; how deep or wide set the eyes are; hair colour; balance of the face and expression; nose and cheek breadth; age; sex; and most importantly, how much hair you have to work with.

In case, like me, you?ve not had the benefit of advice about seeing a professional for your first shape and if you?ve over-plucked or plucked brows to the wrong shape, all is not lost. According to Sharon-Lee there is a product called Talika Lipocilis, which comes from Paris and it helps to actually grow brows back. So, preserve as brows grow, and when they do go see an expert.

Kate adds: ?For those who might have fading brows resembling a weary 1920's starlet, feel confident that there are some spectacular products to shape and define your brow, yet still look naturally flawless. Gel eyeliners are a wonder tool, and when applied with a fine angled brush, give you a precise, yet natural look and has in-built setting power for longevity.

Step by Step To The Perfect Brow

  1. Start with as much hair as you can.
  2. If you are about to change your hair colour do this BEFORE you have your brows done so they can be colour matched.
  3. Invest in a fabulous pair of quality tweezers and rough up the inside of your tweezers regularly with an emery board to keep them clean and accurate.
  4. Tweeze at least once a week to keep them in shape.
  5. For long, thick brows, comb the hairs upwards following the natural hair growth, then smooth hairs along the top edge to soften the finish.
  6. For finer, sparse brows, you may need to comb the brows in an outwards direction to achieve a groomed, polished look.
  7. Finish brows by setting in place with a textured clear mascara, like Napoleon Peep Show Madame Crystal Mascara. $33
