BB recently discovered a new makeup diva that is all about seeking and getting attention so we tracked her down in her home city of New York and got the low-down on why Lime Crime is makeup like you?ve never seen before.
Bright, fantastical and with a growing celeb fan base including the likes of Katy Perry and Lady Ga Ga, we had to find out more about Lime Crime. From its name, packaging and makeup, it is definitely something totally fresh and new.
BB: You are a model and makeup artist and now makeup creator. Tell us how you morphed from model to makeup artist to makeup maven?
I was actually a makeup artist to model and then I started posting makeup tutorials in on my website. It was 2005, before YouTube. It was incredible to see my idea take off in such a big way - there are many brilliant girls doing tutorials online now. Eventually, I transitioned into modelling because there was no one around to model my clothing designs, which I sold on eBay. In fact, that's where the name "Lime Crime" comes from - it used to be the name of my DIY fashion line. As you can guess, lime green was my favourite colour. :)
BB: Your name is Xenia but you have an aka of Doe Deere ? tell us about that, why and what does it mean?
Doe Deere ? who is the more creative, braver version of me - was originally an alter-ego. I invented it one night in 2006 for my music project (http://www.myspace.com/doedeere). I wore antlers on my head and even made an electro pop record. :) Doe Deere may have started as an alter-ego, but eventually she took over - now I'm 100% Doe Deere and happy that way!
BB: Lime Crime is all about very bright colour directions and is definitely not your mainstream cosmetic brand. What made you think there was a niche for this kind of extreme colour and who wears it?
Honestly, I wasn't thinking niches. I always had trouble finding extremely pigmented, bright eyeshadows and lipsticks, and finally decided it's time to make my own! There really was no complicated business plan or marketing manoeuvres. I just made something I liked, and people happened to like it too. :)
BB: How do you incorporate Lime Crime into everyday wear or is it really more about dipping into it when you want to make a bold statement in your look?
I'm like this every day. My house is painted all bright colours and I don't own a single grey, brown or beige article of clothing. My hair is red and usually sprayed with glitter. It's just a way of life for me.
BB: How would you describe the Lime Crime girl?
We call them Unicorn Girls: colourful, gleeful, and sparkling like the river in the sun!
BB: You seem to have a fascination with all things fantastical ? unicorns and magical names are all a feature of Lime Crime. Tell us about that.
I have always been a story teller. When I was 5, my teachers would gather kids around and have me start a story. I made them up on the go. Fairy tales played a huge part in my life; I was obsessed with magical creatures, especially mermaids, and drew them all the time, everywhere - in albums, on walls... I thought my life was one giant fairy tale. And I guess in a way, it still is. I came to the US from Russia with my family when I was 17. We struggled to stay afloat and it took a small miracle for us to make it.
BB: Where do you get your inspiration?
It's a combination of things I see, how I see them, and the desire to regurgitate them into something beautiful. I have a very active imagination that's a non-stop whirlpool of ideas.
BB: How did you start a cosmetic brand?
Though a series of baby steps. First it was research, then reaching out to labs, then designing shades and packaging. I'm very hands-on with everything that goes on in my company and love the creation process!
BB: What?s been the biggest challenge?
Balancing the dreamer and the business woman in me. Switching between the two modes can be tough - one minute you're dreaming up a concept for a new product, another you have a meeting. Sometimes I feel like I should be two people!
BB: Tell us about your blog.
Doe Deere Blogazine is a mix between a magazine and a blog with a happy, positive message. I post articles, makeup tutorials, outfits and letters from readers 5 days a week. It's an ongoing project that's been active for 1.5 years - and no signs of stopping!
BB: What are your dreams for Lime Crime?
Short-term, having my makeup available in more physical stores - I'd love for our fans to be able to try it in person! Long-term, opening an office - can you imaging how cute Lime Crime HQ would be?! My heart is overflowing with glee just thinking about it!
BB: Where is Lime Crime sold?
Currently it's available at Urban Outfitters in Canada, but soon to be available in retail stores in UK, Australia and the US. Go to limecrimemakeup.com to stay updated. In Australia you can get Lime Crime at www.makeupnet.com.au
