Three young girls from Grafton in country NSW had a dream that began at age 6, 7 and 12 for Molly, Samantha and Brooke. It's a dream that has seen them take their country pop style to the home of country music, Nashville, release two kick-arse albums and about to kick off a tour of the US! We chat to Molly from The McClymonts
Wrapped Up Good is your second album to be recorded in Nashville. I would imagine as country singers that would have been a dream from the beginning. Tell us about the experience?
It is truly incredible and a dream come true. We recorded our first album Chaos and Bright Lights in the US and to get the chance to do it again is amazing. Just being in Nashville was so huge for us girls. To do it twice now we feel so lucky. Plus to work with amazing people, like Nathan Chapman, who is Taylor Swift's producer, and Adam Anders, both of whom have come back to work with us on this album is just truly incredible.
You surely must have had many pinch yourselves moments!
We keep pinching ourselves every time we get to something new! It's everyone's dream to record in Nashville and for us to be given the chance to do it twice now is a pretty big thing for three country girls from Grafton!
You mentioned working with some amazing talent, including Taylor Swift's producer. What is it like working with these big names. Is it daunting or exhilarating?
Really exciting. We worked with Nathan on Chaos and Bright Lights and he became good friends with our producer, Adam. Nathan wasn't big at all then. He then went on to produce Taylor's first album. He's just a normal guy and then he got all this success and then he wanted to work with us for our next album. He is such a down to earth, lovely guy, that we were so excited that he still wanted to work with us after all this success.
You are three sisters, recording, touring and working together closely, how does that work?
We go through the highs and lows together. The highs are really high. We fight. We are normal sisters. We have our fights and we get over it in two seconds. I think being sisters makes it extra special when something great comes out of our music and we all get to celebrate that together.
You guys have spent a long time working on your career. How did it all start for you?
Brooke always loved singing. She would tape herself at home and put on talent shows for us. Then mum took her to a talent quest and it just snowballed from there. Samantha and I got up and joined her in performances, we started travelling and performing. People started to recognise who we were and we started to get our own gigs and then Universal saw us and the rest, as they say, is history!
You were 6, Samantha 7 and Brooke 12 when you started out, which is a really young start. What advice would you have for your young self today?
If you believe in yourself you can really do anything! I mean we just started singing as an escape and a hobby to go and see people who loved to do what we did and it just turned into a career and we were very lucky. If you follow your heart and if you believe in yourself then someone else is going to believe in you just as much.
When you started out, what made you decide on country music?
Country music is all Dad listened to. He would be in his shed down the backyard constantly listening to country music so we were bombarded with it. We didn't know any different. We grew up on it and thought it was what everyone listened to. It's just what we thought was normal.
Is it encouraging to you that acts like you guys and Taylor Swift are taking country music into the mainstream and why do you think that's finally happening?
I think people are starting to relate to country music and realising it's quite cool. People like Taylor Swift have certainly helped. She's so young and pretty and she doesn't dress in cowboy boots and hat and sing hillbilly songs. She's actually really modern and people are relating to that and hopefully that's what we are doing as well.
I was going to say, you guys definitely rock a very sexy image that is far removed from a country look or vibe. In your video clip for Wrapped Up Good you're on stage in leather minis and stilettos. Has that been something you cultivated to give you an edge or is it who you have always been?
We will wear our leather minis as long as our legs continue to look OK! It's who we've always been. Our mum is very stylish and would always be done up in high heels. We,ve never seen mum in flat shoes. We've always worn what we've worn.
I love the vid clip to Wrapped Up Good. It's a very slick production. Was it fun to shoot?
It was so much fun. It was so different for us as we'd never done anything like that. Once we got the race track idea we were onto it and loved every second of it. There were stunt car drivers on track driving the cars. It was such a good environment to be in. It was quite crazy that it was all for us!
What's your fave track on the album?
I have a couple but I never get sick of Wrapped Up Good, but ask me that in a couple of months and I might be sick of it. I just love it because it's so pop country and I'm so into that. I also really like A Woman Is A Flame and Take It Back.
You're touring in the US soon?
We're heading out in May for a couple of months as our first album Chaos and Lights has been picked up over there so we'll be promoting that and doing a few gigs and seeing where that goes. We're touring in Australia from now 'til May.
Do you like touring?
Oh, that's the best part. It beats recording, it beats everything. When you see people actually singing your songs, you remember the recording and then you're performing and people are singing your songs, and it's like a full journey. That's what we do it for.
What's been the absolute highlight for you so far?
I know this sounds funny but we got to perform on The Wiggles Show last year and for us to be performing with The Wiggles is an amazing thing. I don't even know how we got on the show but we did and it was definitely a highlight. Everyone wants to perform with The Wiggles and we got to do it.
You've achieved so much, what are your next goals?
Next goals are to hopefully get another album after this one. We hope this one does really well and our first one does really well in America so we can keep on recording and performing
What do guys like doing in your down time?
Brooke's just bought a house so she likes hanging out there. She's a homebody now. I love going to the beach and the movies every week - I'm obsessed. Samantha is an adventurer and loves travelling to different places.
