Movies: Funny People

OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!!

Perhaps the funniest movie ever made (big call I know, but so damn true). Funny People, starring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill and Eric Banner, may very well be the movie of the year!

Bellaboo’s reporter, Kate, was invited to check out the premiere screening of Funny People last month where she joined a host of Australian talent and the industry’s most hard-hitting journo’s to review and rate the film. As just one member of the nations pre-release judging panel, Kate gives this movie a big thumbs up and not one but FIVE gold stars!

Kate’s thoughts and speculations:

The movie is based on George Simmons (Sandler) an A-list celebrity comedian who learns early on that he is suffering from a terminal blood disorder and is given less than one year to live. In the attempt to deal with his life altering news, Simmons realises that despite his access to cash cars and dispensable women, he has no real friends, no connection to his family, and besides his comedic persona, he doesn’t really understand his place in the world.

In desperation, Simmons finds Ira (Rogen) at a stand up bar, working for free, trying to bust his way into the business. Sure enough, the pair become friends when Simmons hires Ira to write his jokes. On his quest to beat his disease and attempt to live as a normal human being for once, Simmons finds himself caught up in a serious yet totally hilarious love triangle, as a career mentor and even more shockingly, associating with people he never considered possible.

Simmons’ outlandish jokes, behaviour and language transcend this movie into a league of its own. Yes, it may make you uncomfortable at times and yes, it will have you running to the bathroom every 15 minutes literally bursting with laughter, but it also includes some crude yet beneficial life lessons for its viewers.

Special mention: Eric Bana returns to the comedy scene after a whirlwind of action roles. Banner plays an eccentric Aussie businessman married to Laura (Leslie Mann), Simmons’ old flame.

Something interesting: The opening scene of the film is actual 20-year-old real life footage of Adam Sandler making prank calls inside his New York Apartment. The then struggling comedian is accompanied by an array of now familiar and successful stars…see if you can spot them!

Funny People will be released in cinemas nation wide on September 10th, 2009.
