When The Hipchicks Went to War is set in the 1960's and centers around a girl named Kathy. Kathy is a 16-year-old girl who comes from a large family of 10 and really just wants to go out and experience life.

Kathy's life is that of a normal teen - made up of mini skirts, make up and a love of shoes. That is until her brother is drafted and sent off to the army. After being made aware of the war, Kathy sees an advertisement for an audition to entertain the troops. Kathy reasons that it would be a great way to see the world and thinks "travel, adventure, excitement" After getting the job, and staying less than six months, her life is changed for ever.

A novel based around the true experiences of Australian girls and what they had gone through during the 1960's. Compelling and eye opening showing the real horrors of what war can bring.
