Dan Levy and Olivia Merilahti are two parts of the new music sensation The DØ. Hailing from France, this music duo is set to arrive in Australia to perform at V Festival and rock your world! These two have been praised for their ability to meld all types of genres, so if you're a fan of rock, pop or dance you are destined to enjoy their music. Diana catches up with Dan Levy, one half of The DØ, to get lowdown on their upcoming Australian visit and how it all began….
Let's start at where it all began… how did you come up with the name the DØ?
It's actually really simple. I thought it would be wonderful to have a name with two letters, like D and O. So it's D for Dan and O for Olivia. No secret. It's really straightforward and that's what Olivia and I really wanted! We didn't want to have our band name to be some logo or something that we wanted to say to people, like, "clean up this town!"
How did you and Olivia get together?
We met while we were working on a soundtrack for a movie. On this movie Olivia was making the songs and I was making the music and so the producer wanted us to work together. It was a very good collaboration.
Your debut album went straight to number one in France. When you found out, how did you feel?
It was a surprise! When our CD went to number one it was amazing because it was the first time ever in France that a French band singing in English went to number one. So we were very happy. We were number one, someone else was number two and Amy Winehouse number three so it was really cool!
Speaking of other bands, The DØ meld a lot of genres so who would you name as your inspirations?
Well, we listen to a lot of music but it's a hard question, I don't really know… there is nothing… it's only us.
Have you ever been to Australia before?
No, and I am so happy that I m coming. I have some family in Sydney and since I was a child I always wanted to visit Australia. But it was too far and too expensive. But now I am coming to Australia AND I get to play music AND see my family, so that's great!
Is your family going to come to the V festival to watch you???
I'm sure they will!
And what's the first thing you want to do when you get here?
Maybe help the Australian people fight the bushfires. It's horrible!
Olivia and I arrive three days before V fest to relax in Sydney and so we will just see the sights, go to the beach. I just can't imagine what Australia is like. For me it's like another planet!
Another planet? So do you expect to see kangaroos wandering around in the city?
And koalas! If I meet some kangaroos I will be very, very happy!
Are you happy with the response from Australia in regards to your music?
I don't really know what the response has been. You see with Europe when you're promoting an album here, you go to different cities and countries and you see the reaction directly for the people. I don't know if the CD is doing well in Australia and if people like the album.
What do you love best about performing at Festivals like the V festival?
We spent all of last May to September playing at festivals and it was sooo good. It's not like when you're playing at a venue. I love the feeling of festivals. When it's sunny or raining its something special. It's very cool.
What's the next thing you want to accomplish?
I want to finish a second album and I just want the second album to be as good as the first. You see on the first album we didn't know that we were making an album as it just happened, but now we know we are doing a second album so it is exciting. We put in all our creativity to make this CD so I hope it will be a good one.
Tell us something that people don't know about u? A secret of The DØ!
(laughs) That I don't really know… the secret is that we are
in love with what we do and it's wonderful. There's no secret like you
could conjure up yourself.
