Movies: Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger

This coming of age film is not your average coming of age film. It will have you laughing, cringing and crying. An incredible cast, including newcomer Danielle Cantazariti in the lead, with Keisha Castle-Hughes (The Whale Rider) and Toni Collette.

The basic story centres on Esther - a 14- year-old Jewish girl who is herself. She simply does not and cannot be anything but herself, even if that means she does not fit in. This in itself is the catalyst of her problems and her incredible journey of self-discovery. At her very cliquey private school she spends all her time on her own due to her inability to be like the other girls and fit in.

She meets her epitome of cool chick in Sunni - an edgy, brave public school girl who encourages Esther to go AWOL from her life. She leaves her private school, unbeknownst to her parents, and attends Sunni's school as a new and, in her eyes, improved version of herself. She is edgy, cool and popular. But, in her transition there are parts of her that come to resemble the girls she so despised - the girls who found popularity through bitchiness and bullying.

She embraces her new life, rebelling against her dysfunctional and disparate family, and spending more and more time with Sunni and her mum in their bohemian family. An event rocks both her disparate worlds and forces her to face up to who she really is.

If you've ever been on the outer; desperately craved to find your clique and to fit in; wanted to be cool and popular; then you will relate to this gorgeous film. It is very honest and very real. It's a movie about the everyday stuff that you can relate to as a teen but with real drama and conflict.
