In one paragraph summarise you – who you are, what you do, what motivates you, what you are passionate about:
I am a clinical psychologist with a passion for working with young people...especially girls!! I have spent many, many years helping young women overcome depression, suicidality. debilitating anxiety, eating disorders and relationship problems. I have a special interest in body image and eating disorders and am doing my PhD in this area. I hope to be able to help young men and women overcome their body image and self esteem issues EARLY so that they don't develop into something more serious....this is my life goal!!!!! Young people are our future, and I believe today more than ever they are faced with huge pressures to be perfect and beautiful. If only they realised that they already are!!!!!!
Who was your role model/s when you were a teen?
People like Naomi Wolf, who are passionate about the same things I am passionate about. They don't subscribe to social ideals, and are all about self acceptance. Having said that....I did love Wonder Woman - purely because I wanted super powers, and an invisible plane!
How did your role model/s help you?
They helped me channel my "superhuman" strength to push forward and follow my passion!
What role or influence do you think role models have?
Role models have a huge influence. Positive role models exhibit an inner strength and acceptance of who they are. Recognising limits is important. We cannot be all things to all people.....so asserting boundaries, and learning from others is important. Good role models help others recognise their value and worth as an individual. They are positive, and embrace individuality!
What were some of the issues you faced as a teen?
My parents separated when I was 13 years old. My family went into meltdown, and I have had only sporadic contact with my father ever since. My once perfect family shattered, and my mother found it extremely difficult to cope. Thankfully my brothers and sister were there to support me. I really don't know where I would be now if it were not for them. As a perfectionist, I have always set extremely high standards for myself. As a result, I struggled with anxiety for a number of years. It was only when I hit my mid 20's that I began to accept myself for who I am.
How did you overcome these issues?
My family helped me by loving me despite my imperfections! I also had some wonderful friends who were like sisters, and provided me with unconditional and unwavering support and understanding. I turned to psychology, and through my study, I began the process of self exploration. I started to join the dots. The result, was the insight to see why I am the way I am, and with this came the ability to make the necessary changes in my life.
What do you remember most about being a teen?
My friends, the sleep overs, music concerts, school holidays, changing my hair colour, giggling about boys, feeling nervous around boys, and eating Thai food!!! What qualities do you think you possess that has helped you succeed in your chosen field?
Definitley passion, and a belief that I can do just about anything if I put my mind to it.
Outside of career success, what is it that you are most proud of? My husband and wonderful children! I am lucky to be married to a wonderful man, who knows me better than anyone....and loves me uconditionally. I have two beautiful children and a beautiful step-daughter. We are very lucky, and never take each other for granted.
Do you undertake activities to help others/community? If so, please detail:
My clinical work is all about helping others, especially young people. I also have a few young people that I mentor, often past patients who I remain in contact with. Your advice to youths about realising their own potential…:
Look inside yourself and see your own individual strengths, rather than use others as a comparison. We all have strengths, sometimes we a need a little help to see them. Don't be afraid to ask for help as this shows strength not weakness. There is no-one in the world like you, you are unique. Surround yourself with people who make you feel good about who you are. When others try and put you down, recognise that this is more about them and not you. Stay focused on your goals, and never let anyone tell you you cannot achieve them! When it comes to how you live your life, what are the most important factors/values? Honesty, compassion, love, committment. A sense of humour is a must!
